Connecting to the ERAU LDAP Server

Email clients capable of connecting to LDAP servers can connect to ERAU's LDAP server. Caution: IT has never officially committed to maintaining this service and they have a history of changing server names, search filters, or other parameters without notice; but the host name, port number, and search filter shown below are working as of this writing (6 Nov 2008). They should work for any email client; the specific instructions and screen shots here, below, are for Thunderbird:

   1.   Open the Thunderbird Address Book:

   2.   Select File >> New >> LDAP Directory ...

   3.   On the General tab, set Name to anything you like, perhaps something really clever like, "ERAU LDAP"; set Hostname to "ldap.erau.edu" [leave out the "quotes"], and leave the other parameters at their default values (blank, except for Port number, for which the default is correctly set to 389)

   4.   On the Advanced tab, set the Search filter to "(mail=*)", leaving out
the "quotes", and click "OK".

Note: Thunderbird allows you to pick one of the LDAP servers you define as your global default for address lookup/completion when composing email from any of your accounts or select different LDAP servers to be used for different accounts; consult the Thunderbird documentation for details.
