Other Online Sources of Unix
Information
- There are a large number of good web tutorials on Unix around; here
are a few links valid as of this writing:
- In the unlikely event that you need to lookup something possibly non-standard
about the specific flavor of Unix we run here on campus, Sun Microsystems
(the vendor for Solaris, the [very standard] Unix that runs here on sun
and mercury, among other machines) has a nice set of
online documentation for all their OS versions; check with campus IT for
the current version on the machine you want information on. Note that the
web site is from Sun, the vendor IT's local installation and
necessary customizations render some of that material inapplicable to our
specific installation.
- There is an entire hierarchy of comp.unix.* newsgroups
available on the Usenet.
There is also a Unix Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) list posted routinely
to comp.answers, another Usenet newsgroup. The FAQ includes some low
level wizardry, in fact. (Real wizardry, by definition, is never published
anywhere; only handed down mythically from wizard to wizard. ;-) As
a computer professional, you should start checking comp.answers routinely
anyway. All sorts of good stuff gets posted there. In fact, you
should make yourself familiar with the entire comp.* hierarchy, an invaluable
source of professional information.
